Director, Executive Management Program Office

Government/Military/Defense

Professional Firsts

As the current Director of the Executive Management Program Office, I am the first military spouse of an active duty service member to hold this position. Military spouses often face frequent unemployment due to multiple moves and struggle to advance to this senior level in government. In this position, I am responsible for the human resource programs and services for C-Suite executives in the Department of the Navy which includes policy development, implementation, and overall program oversight. I am responsible for providing accurate information to inform the executive personnel decisions of the Secretary and Under Secretary of the Navy.

I authored language on behalf of the Air Force that made it into the State of the Union Address (Pres. George W. Bush) regarding the need for military spouses to pursue careers simultaneously with their active duty service members. This was a small catalyst to the military spouse preference enacted by Executive Order and afforded to military spouses today.

SENIOR DIRECTOR, INCOME TRACKING

MUSIC PUBLISHING

Professional Firsts

The first person (woman or man) to create and lead the Income Tracking Department at The Harry Fox Agency (HFA).

The first and only woman of color to lead and manage Income Tracking Departments at (3) different music publishers/organizations.

At this time, the only woman of color in this area of expertise in the music publishing industry throughout the US.

Also wanted to point out, that music publishing is an important aspect of the music industry. A publisher owns the copyright to a song. Income Tracking is the area that ensures the proper payment of royalties to songwriters and publishers for the use of their songs whether played on the radio, television, by digital services providers such as Spotify and Apple, etc. This area is very niche and one I have built my professional reputation for over the past 2 decades.

I also formed and organized a professional women's group called Lisa's Living Room. It provides a safe space for women to share their personal and professional experiences in order to encourage camaraderie and promote conversation and change.

I’m an award-winning journalist who worked as a staff writer for two East Coast newspapers before accepting a New York-based reporting position with the then Time Inc.-owned People magazine. The publication has the largest audience of any American magazine, is the world's most successful magazine and received Advertising Age’s “Magazine of the Year” award (among other accolades) during my 14-year tenure.

Firsts:
• Following my promotion from reporter to writer-reporter, I became the first writer-reporter of any race or gender assigned to People’s newly-created New York Bureau. Prior to that, bureau positions were the sole province of correspondents. (I was promoted to correspondent shortly after.)

• I was also the first and only African-American, male or female, to reach the magazine’s bureau chief ranks, whether deputy or chief. (After being promoted to deputy bureau chief in Chicago, I served as acting bureau chief during the chief’s two medical leaves and subsequently turned down a promotion to a permanent bureau chief’s position because I did not want to relocate again.)

• While at People, I also earned a first place Los Angeles Press Club award for my reporting.
