Ms. Mesidor Ulysse rose to notoriety in 2013 when she procured a unanimous jury award in Johnson v. STRIVE, a landmark case decidedly settling the issue of whether those of the same race can discriminate against one another. Additionally, her work against the disparate impact of "poor door" policies on rent stabilized tenants has earned her recognition by the Office of the Public Advocate.

Professional Firsts

I am one of the few Black, American botanists in the United States. I currently am working on my doctoral degree at the University of New Mexico. I am the only Black student in my cohort, and to my knowledge also the only black graduate student in the department of Biology. My research background began studying algal systematics at the University of Alabama. My obtained my master's degree studying plant systematics of a unique, understudied genus of shrubs in the western US and northern Mexico. Throughout my academic career, I have worked to expose undergraduate students to my profession and other research based fields in addition to mentoring students academically. My ultimate goal is to become a professor and train the next generation of scientists. Having experienced often being the only Black student/researcher, I especially want to mentor students of color and provide insights on overcoming the challenges (both academic and cultural) in pursuing this profession. Upon the release of the National Science Foundations doctoral recipient statistics, I realized of the 297 biology doctoral degrees awarded to Black students in 2017 (out of ~8,500 total) only 5 graduates represented my fields: 2 in botany, 2 in ecology, and 1 in evolutionary biology. With black students only composing 1% of the botany awarded doctorates, I hope to have an impact on my students and their navigation through the field of biology and increase diversity in the hard sciences.
