Professional Firsts

In 2003 I was the youngest and only African American Woman out of twelve awardees from throughout the world to receive the Nyswander/Dole "Marie" Award, from the American Association For The Treatment of Opioid Dependence, Incorporated.

This award acknowledges the exceptional service to persons with the disease of opioid addiction. This was a Professional First because it had been six years since an African American had received the award and I was the only one to received the award at the 2004 conference. This is highest award and recognition in the field of Opioid Treatment.

It was also an opportunity to show other professionals in the field of Opioid Addiction that with hard work, dedication and passion you can be recognized no matter your race, gender or age. I was the only awardee to receive a standing ovation after my acceptance speech.
